San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo

Travis Reed - May 6, 2021
Every year San Antonio looks forward to February as that is the time for the Stock Show and Rodeo at the AT&T center. This year it goes from February 12th through March 1st. During that time the rodeo hosts many events both inside and outside of the stadium. Inside during the rodeo you see different activities that make up the rodeo from the Grand Entry to Bull riding. All of this is made possible by not only the ticket purchasing spectators but the generosity of our donors to the various rodeo committees.

The Committee that I would like to talk about now is Calf Scramble Committee which I am privileged to be a part of. People know that Calf Scramble as the event that takes place during the rodeo where you see young teen members of the 4-H and FFA catch and halter a calf and bring them across the finish line. A fun Texas style musical chair competition where the winners receive aid in purchasing and breading of animals that are raised and shown at the Livestock Show the following year.

What most do not realize is all the work that goes behind this event and the contributions that are raised by its committee members. The Calf Scramble Committee, a part of the San Antonio Livestock Exposition (S.A.L.E) mission is to emphasize agriculture and education to develop the youth of Texas. The funds that we raise support this mission and the Calf Scramble event so our youth can be educated and be able to purchase the animals to be raised and entered into the Stock show.

The Calf Scramble committee also oversees the Boots ‘N Shoot event and fundraising which also supports the Calf Scramble Program and S.A.L.E. Taking place in August, this event is a 5 stand an individual clay shooting competition. This all day competition hosts over 70 teams which concludes with a catered dinner, drinks where the awards are announced. People can also enjoy live music and dancing as well as the live & silent auction.

The Stock Show and Rodeo is an important part of our great City. Awarded PRCA large indoor rodeo of the year since 2005, this event is not only known here but recognized across the country. Thousand gather from not only San Antonio but across the country to join and compete in this event. It is a privilege of mine to be a part of it and encourage all to support and partake in this event.
